As part of the Kwa Geok Choo Distinguished Visitors Lecture series, Professor Danny Busch, Professor of Financial Law at Radboud University, will deliver a lecture examining one of the most pressing legal questions facing the financial sector: who governs sustainable finance in an era of accelerating climate change?

Drawing on developments in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the United States and China, Busch will explore how legislators, regulators and courts are shaping the transition towards sustainable finance. Particular attention will be paid to climate litigation against banks, including recent proceedings involving ING in the Netherlands and BNP Paribas in France. These cases raise fundamental questions about whether banks owe a duty of care to society and future generations to align their financing activities with climate objectives, and whether such responsibilities should be defined by lawmakers, regulators or judges. The lecture will also address the growing backlash against climate-focused financial policies in the United States and the changing regulatory landscape in Europe.

The event will be chaired by Professor Ernest Lim, Chan Sek Keong Professor in Private Law and Vice Dean (Faculty Development) at NUS Law.
