Organised in cooperation with the Embassy of Switzerland in the Netherlands, the Hague Initiative for Law and Armed Conflict (HILAC) and the International Humanitarian and Criminal Law Platform, this event will examine how the protection of civilians in armed conflict can be strengthened amid growing concerns about attacks on civilian populations and humanitarian actors.
The programme features contributions from Professor Gloria Gaggioli (University of Geneva), who will discuss the protection of civilians under international humanitarian law; Guénaël Mettraux, Judge at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, who will address criminal accountability for violations of international humanitarian law; and Professor Chiara Giorgetti, Vice-Chair of the Board of the Register of Damage for Ukraine, who will examine avenues for victim compensation, using Ukraine as a case study.
The lecture offers an opportunity to reflect on contemporary challenges in the protection of civilians, the enforcement of international humanitarian law, and mechanisms for accountability and reparation in situations of armed conflict. The event is free to attend and will be followed by a reception.
