The Leiden Law School research theme Law & Empirics will host a session on Participatory Socio-Legal Action Research, led by Matthew Canfield, Associate Professor at the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society. The session introduces Participatory Action Research (PAR), a research approach that involves communities experiencing social and legal injustice as active collaborators in the produc­tion of knowledge.

The event explores the opportunities and challenges of applying PAR within socio-legal scholarship. 
Particular attention will be paid to questions of power, responsibility and co-creation in research, as well as the ways in which participatory methods challenge conventional forms of academic legal inquiry. Participants will also be invited to reflect on how PAR methods can be incorporated into their own research projects.
