How can law sustain diversity and inclusion in increasingly unequal societies at a time when illiberalism is gaining ground across Europe and North America? This SPUI25 event explores the role of legal frameworks, affirmative action measures and diversity policies in promoting equality and representation. At the same time, the discussion critically examines the limitations of these approaches, asking whether existing legal instruments adequately address structural inequalities and whether diversity initiatives sometimes remain largely symbolic. Bringing together perspectives from law, feminist and critical theory, and education, the speakers will reflect on the meaning of diversity and inclusion today and compare developments in Europe and the United States. The event offers an opportunity to engage with one of the most contested issues in contemporary politics and public life.
