Utrecht University is launching the Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) dialogues to invite more critical discussion across and between the IOS Platforms. The first one, entitled The Great Disenchantment: the Struggle of Institutions, is planned on Monday October 13th.
For a long time, certain sets of institutions have been believed to be essential pillars of ‘open societies’: liberal democracy, international law and state-led military security. However, we have also observed how these and other institutions struggle with global societal challenges such as ecological breakdown, the rise of authoritarianism and escalating geopolitical tensions, most notably in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine. This first IOS-dialogue, discusses the troubling state of these institutions and if, how and to what extent we should and can transform institutions.
The dialogue starts with three short talks by the following speakers:
- Dr. Jeroen Oomen
- Prof. Dr. Brianne McGonigle Leyh
- Prof. Dr. Jolle Demmers
These talks will be followed by discussion and dialogue amongst panelists and participants.
